Third book, 4.5 days, 120 plus reviews

Back in January, I wrote a post entitled ‘One book, one week, one hundred reviews’ celebrating the phenomenal speed at which book 2 in the Hedgehog Hollow series – New Arrivals at Hedgehog Hollow – was gathering reviews. You can read it here. I’d never known anything like that before…

Until now!

As you can probably guess from the title of this blog post, book 3 has smashed it. At lunchtime today, 4.5 days into publication, Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow passed the 100 mark on Amazon. In fact, it did it so quickly that it jumped from 90 when I looked earlier to 110 the next time I checked and it’s now at 122!

In January, I was also astonished at how many reviews I got before any 1 or 2-stars crept in. It actually passed a whopping 400.

Of the 122 reviews/ratings showing at the time of writing this post, there are 2 at 2-star so I’m not going to match that record, but there is still a stack of love for the hedgehogs with 92% of those 122 being at 4 or 5-star.

The hedgehogs and I are so very grateful. When I was a struggling indie author making little impact with my writing, I used to see the excitement from readers as a favourite author released their book and devoted fans raced to read it. I’ve even done it myself with one of the books in J K Rowling’s Harry Potter series, buying it on release day and devouring it across the next three days, and with a couple of Jill Mansell’s books. I never ever imagined this happening to anything I’ve ever written yet the speed of reviews coming in and the lovely messages from readers tell me it is. It really is a dream come true.

In the meantime, Finding Love at Hedgehog Hollow (book 1) and New Arrivals at Hedgehog Hollow (book 2) are both speeding towards the 2,000 reviews/ratings mark. Eek!

And book 4 – A Wedding at Hedgehog Hollow – is up for pre-order on Amazon here. With no cover and no blurb yet, it is already heading for the Top 1,000 which is also astonishing. Double eek!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and thanks again. Hedgehogs dos and don’t will still be coming later but I had to quickly dip in to share this news!

Big hedge-hugs

Welcome to Hedgehog Awareness Week

Starting today it is Hedgehog Awareness Week in the UK – Sunday 2nd May until Saturday 8th May.

Various activities and promotional events are happening and you can join in/stay informed by following the hashtag #hedgehogweek on social media.

The British Hedgehog Preservation Society are running giveaways, posting top tips and sharing expert videos on their Facebook page which you can find here. The People’s Trust for Endangered Species also have loads of great information on their Facebook page here.

I’ll be sharing my hedgehog facts and tips again later in the week.

Timing wasn’t deliberate but couldn’t have been more perfect for the release of the third instalment of the Hedgehog Hollow series. Book 3 – Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow – will be out tomorrow on all these formats:

  • eBook on Apple, Kindle and Kobo
  • Paperback
  • Large print
  • Hardback
  • Physical audio
  • Audio download

Here’s the blurb to whet your appetite:

Every family has its secrets, and at Hedgehog Hollow there is no exception…

It was always Samantha’s dream to run her beautiful rescue centre, Hedgehog Hollow, full-time. But just as her wish comes true, she becomes a victim of her own kindness when she finds herself with a house full of guests – all with their own problems and secrets – looking to her for support.

When her self-absorbed cousin, Chloe, unexpectedly turns up at the farm – swiftly handing over her baby to Samantha to care for – trouble is definitely brewing. Especially as Chloe won’t tell anyone why she’s left her husband, James…

As Samantha juggles new hedgehog arrivals, family dramas and her own health challenges, it soon becomes clear that she needs to start putting herself first for once. Little does she know that life-changing secrets from the past are about to unravel and turn their lives upside down…

Return to glorious Hedgehog Hollow with top 10 bestseller Jessica Redland for a heartwarming, emotional but uplifting story of family, friendship and moving on from the past.

Praise for the Hedgehog Hollow series:

‘I loved my trip to Hedgehog Hollow. An emotional read, full of twists and turns’ Heidi Swain

‘A wonderful, warm series full of family, friends and romance.’ Katie Ginger

I was really excited earlier today as it climbed the Kindle charts to its highest position so far of #354 which is amazing when it’s still only on pre-order. It’s had the greatest number of pre-orders of all my books so far and I am trying not to get too excited about where that should see it charting tomorrow but I am expecting the hedgehogs to do me super proud. Watch this space!

Which put me at #68 in the Hot New Releases Chart (when it isn’t even released yet!) and #74 in the Movers & Shakers Chart. Eek!

Thank you to everyone who has pre-ordered or who downloads it in whatever format from publication day and thank you to all the amazing supporters of hedgehogs all over the country from the heroes who run rescue centres to those who feed the hogs in their gardens. You’re all amazing!

Please do check out all the activities going on this week.

Big hugs

Signed paperbacks are now available

I’ve been meaning to do this for ages but there’s always a new book to write so finding time for the admin side of things can be a bit of a challenge. However, in the gap between waiting for edits on book 13 and starting on book 14, I’ve finally got my act together and am really excited to offer signed paperbacks.

I have ten titles available at the moment and am offering them for £12.99 each which includes 2nd class p&p in the UK only. For overseas readers, I’m happy to look into additional postage costs if you DM me on social media letting me know which book(s) interest you. They’re all different weights and thicknesses so I do need the books to be able to get an overseas no-obligation quote.

I have a couple of special offers available too. These will change over time and are not transposable onto other books i.e. I’m not offering this on any combination of two or four books:

And there’s also a very special offer for anyone who would like the full set of ten paperbacks:

This is both exciting and nerve-wracking for me because, when I ordered, I had no idea whether anyone would even want any. When I unpacked them, I hoped they would as I have 200 paperbacks clogging up my office otherwise although I can always build a Whitsborough Bay Fortress or Hedgehog Hollow hideaway to play in if they don’t!

Imposter’s syndrome has also taken hold. This morning, I posted the pricing in my Redland’s Readers Facebook group and my fingers were sweating so much I could barely type. Mmm, attractive! The imposter is screaming, ‘Who do you think you are? Who on earth would want you to sign a paperback? Only brilliant successful authors get to do that!’ Ooh, I wish that voice would shush!

I am a little shocked and delighted that I have had 3 orders for the full set of ten already and one single one which has made me very happy and has helped quieten the imposter … a little!

My office is a scary mess! The paperbacks arrived by courier across ten boxes over two days and I’ve managed to fit them in four now but I have an absolute stack of packaging piled up in the corner. Presumably the printer had to limit the weight of each box so couldn’t fill it with books, hence all the packing paper. I can’t bring myself to shove all this in the recycling bin but can’t see me getting through much of it myself as I have some boxes which fit nine books in perfectly with no movement (gutted they couldn’t quite fit ten in) and smaller orders will go in jiffy bags. We’re hoping to move house in the next year so I might need to flatten it all out and pop it into the attic until then.

If anyone would like one of my signed paperbacks or would like to take advantage of one of the offers, please DM me on Twitter (@JessicaRedland), Instagram (@jessicaredlandauthor) or Facebook which you can find here.

My preferred method of payment is PayPal but I can consider other options which we can discuss via DM. On your book(s), I can:

  1. Sign them only with a very short standard message from me
  2. As number 1 plus your name (or the name of the person to whom you wish to gift the book(s))
  3. As number 2 plus a dedication

Right, I’m off to fold up some packaging material. Hope you have a fabulous weekend.

Big hugs
Jessica xx
